Amelia Bedelia Road Trip! By Herman Parish
Amelia Bedelia Road Trip! is the third book in the Amelia Bedelia series written by Herman Parish! It is recommended for ages 6-10. As of right now, I have read just over half of the book! I'm not going to lie, I literally laughed out loud more than once while reading the first seven chapters!
Amelia Bedelia's father was rewarded an extra vacation bonus for his hard work. The family of three decided to roam the state for a week! Her parents do not have a set destination, but they are using a paper map.. which is quite confusing for them. So far, they have been lost three different times. Amelia Bedelia was given a blank journal so she could document their trip! This journal helps to keep her busy during the long car rides! The second day of their trip, they plan to visit a small town that is celebrating it's 300th birthday! At the town celebration, they met the mayor who offered them a key to his cabin on Lake Largemouth! When they arrived to the cabin, they decide to take the mayors boat out for a spin! While on the lake, Amelia Bedelia meets a young girl named Audrey. Audrey is going to teach Amelia Bedelia how to fish! As for right now, that is where I have stopped reading! I am so excited to see how Audrey and Amelia Bedelia's friendship grows! I wonder what else Amelia Bedelia's family is going to do on their vacation! I also wonder how many more times they will get lost before they purchase a GPS!
As I read this book, I notice that the author includes many examples of figure of speech. Often times it leaves Amelia Bedelia confused. She tends to take everything literally! I appreciate how the book also includes small illustrations by Lynne Avril. Since this is one of the first chapter books students might read, these illustrations make the book less intimidating! This book also teaches readers a couple random facts, such as; the shape of Italy, how to read a map (even though Amelia Bedelia's family is extremely unsuccessful doing so themselves), what the suffix "-ometer" means, who Daniel Boone is, etc. While this book is funny and adventurous, it is also informative!
I am SO excited to read the rest of this book! Amelia Bedelia keeps everyone on their toes which makes for an enjoyable read! I just might have to read the rest of this series!

Kara, I like how you summarized your book, but yet didn't give away any big details that would spoil the book for others. I also like how you brought up the illustrations and how they create a less intimidating book. Often times we only focus on the content of the book, rather than the illustrations and images behind the words that also give meaning to the story line.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Amelia Bedelia as a kid and I think that reading your review makes me want to re-read them as part of my 20 Book Challenge. Your summary of the book leaves just enough to get me hooked. I also think that the revamping of the illustrations from the original is more up-to-date with children today. It makes the story more relatable when they are able to read the chapters and see the images simultaneously. :-)
ReplyDeleteKara,
ReplyDeleteI am so eager to get my hands on a few AMelia Bedelia books! I have never read one but I have heard nothing but great things about them. It sounds like you are really enjoying this one as well! I always love a book with humor in it so this sounds perfect for me and for elementary kids as well. Based off of your blog about their road trip it seems like I can relate to a few things in this book like getting lost. I am notorious for getting lost. I cannot wait to be able to get into these books myself!
Hey Kara!
ReplyDeleteIt is so evident by your post that you are enjoying this book! I love how enthusiastic you are when telling us about the book, it is definitely enlightening to see how engaged you are with Amelia Bedelia! I remember these books from elementary school, and how they're great books for readers who are just beginning chapter books (if I remember correctly). Your post definitely makes me want to read a couple again to refresh my memory!
